Today’s bible verse is taken from John. Among the biblical characters, John the Baptist was distinct. John was a charismatic prophet and preacher who gathered sizable audiences to hear his teachings. John was informed by his disciples one day that Jesus was also baptizing individuals and that an increasing number of people were coming to Him. John’s disciples wanted to know if he was jealous of Jesus because they were worried. John gave an amazing response. “He has to grow, but I have to shrink,” he declared (John 3:30). John realized that his mission was to set the path for Jesus and that his personal ministry would take a backseat until Jesus arrived.
Through this bible verse, we see that Jesus’ teaching was more profound and authoritative than John’s. Jesus spoke with the authority of God, while John spoke as a prophet. We create space for Jesus to grow in our lives when we become less. This entails setting aside our personal goals and aspirations in order to follow Jesus. It also entails being open to learning from Jesus, teachable, and humble. We are changed when Jesus becomes more and more present in our lives. Our capacity for love, compassion, and forgiveness increases. Additionally, we strengthen our witness for Christ.
