Matthew 5:46
“For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?”
Explanation:
In this verse, in Matthew 5:46, we learn that loving those who love us back is natural. It is common for most people to love those who are nice to them. However, Jesus expects His disciples to do more than what is natural when it comes to love. When He says, “What reward have ye?”, it means that loving those who love us back is not enough.
Today’s Bible verse: This passage challenges us to love even if the affection is not reciprocated. Love within Christianity should not be based solely on the treatment that we receive from others. It means being gracious, forgiving, long-suffering, and compassionate towards others, even if they choose to ignore us, mistreat us, or oppose us. This does not necessarily mean allowing ourselves to be taken advantage of; rather, it involves making the choice not to retaliate with malice.
Conclusion:
So, Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in conclusion, it is clear that this message can be put into practice through finding occasions to do good to others even without expecting anything from them. We can forgive those who wrong us, pray for those who mistreat us, speak gently to those who are harsh to us, and serve those who cannot pay us back. Rather than asking, “What are they doing to me?” we should be asking ourselves, “How can I love them?” If we love not only our friends but also our enemies, then it shows true Christian love.
